I would identify an audience as being a single person or a group of people that are going to relate or be interested in the topic that I am addressing. An audience is going to want to read your book or article, and they might share the same beliefs or values as you, or they may have the complete opposite view of your topic.

“You’ll Lose Your Teeth, Kid”: The FDA’s New Anti-Smoking Campaign for Teens

The audience of this article would have to be teenagers who are smoking cigarettes because they are trying to scare them and show them what smoking can do to your mouth and your teeth. I think that this article would draw the attention of youngsters who are smoking and who are not smoking to prevent them for starting or to stop them from continuing to smoke.
